Ukraine's Top General Urges NATO to Evolve as War Drags On
Valeriy Zaluzhny, Ukraine's ambassador to the UK and former Commander-in-Chief, has raised concerns about NATO's approach to rearmament and its strategic paradigm in the face of the evolving conflict in Ukraine. He believes that the alliance's current methods are outdated and ineffective.
Zaluzhny criticises NATO's tendency to treat new equipment as simple replacements, rather than considering it part of a broader transformation. He argues that the alliance's strategic paradigm is still shaped by World War II and not suited to the current phase of the Ukraine conflict. Zaluzhny questions NATO's ability to respond effectively to a large-scale crisis in its current form.
To keep up with rapid defence technology innovation, Zaluzhny advocates for integrating British technological capabilities into Ukraine's defence industrial base. He also supports the UK's 'Coalition of the Willing' initiative for financing weapons production, though he notes the slow pace of democracies in such matters. While up to 26 countries have expressed interest in providing troops for a potential ceasefire, no specific countries have officially committed to the coalition for financing weapons production.
Zaluzhny warns that the future of warfare will be dominated by 'ultra-cheap, ultra-effective technologies', rather than traditional arsenals. He argues that the economic model of NATO warfare is unsustainable in a conflict where daily drone launches outpace interception capabilities. Zaluzhny predicts that the war will last until a conflict resolution emerges, which could take three to five years.
Zaluzhny urges Western governments to reassess their defence strategies due to the evolving battlefield realities. He believes that a change in approach is necessary to effectively support Ukraine and maintain a sustainable military effort.
