Mars Petcare Opens Gold-LEED Certified Center, Aims for Carbon Neutrality by 2040
In a significant step towards sustainability, Mars Petcare opened a Gold-LEED certified Global Innovation Center in 2014, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. This move aligns with the growing focus on sustainability in the petfood industry, as demonstrated by Novus International Inc.'s Platinum LEED certification for its headquarters in 2009.
Sander Geelen, managing director of Geelen Counterflow, predicts that sustainability will soon be a crucial factor in the petfood industry due to climate change and resource limitations. The company has set a goal to make all its dryers capable of running on renewable energy by 2040, with a zero carbon dryer in development. This commitment is reflected in their new office, which received a Five Star BREEAM-NL certificate for its 100% sustainable design.
Wenger Manufacturing offers preconditioners and extruders designed to reduce energy consumption and allow users to select energy sources based on regional availability. Meanwhile, Nestlé Purina emphasizes self-education and responsible sourcing as key aspects of sustainability in the industry. Mars Petcare has also shown leadership by receiving the first Five Star 'outstanding' BREEAM-NL certificate for a sustainably designed new office building.
The petfood industry is increasingly prioritizing sustainability, with companies like Mars Petcare, Novus International, Geelen Counterflow, and Wenger Manufacturing leading the way. Through energy-efficient designs, renewable energy targets, and responsible sourcing, these companies are working towards a more sustainable future for the industry.
