U.S. Initiates USMCA Talks With Mexico Amid Compliance Concerns

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has initiated discussions with Mexican officials regarding alleged breaches of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). This comes as the trade deal is set for review in 2026, with both countries expressing confidence in reaching a satisfactory agreement.

The USMCA, which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), is due for a comprehensive review in 2026. This review will consider the distinct bilateral trade relationships between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Greer has suggested that future USMCA negotiations may lean more towards bilateral talks between the U.S. and each of its neighbors, rather than trilateral discussions.

Greer's concerns about Mexico's compliance with the USMCA have been echoed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has questioned the need for the agreement and floated the idea of renegotiation. Mexico, however, has acknowledged U.S. concerns and expressed a willingness to address them. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard have both expressed confidence in reaching a positive outcome in the USMCA review, which is expected to involve bilateral negotiations.

The 2026 review of the USMCA is set to consider bilateral trade relationships between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. With Greer's talks with Mexican officials and the U.S.'s expressed concerns about compliance, the future of the USMCA hangs in the balance. Both countries, however, remain optimistic about reaching a beneficial agreement.
