Spain Strikes Blow Against Cocaine Smugglers - Spanish Police Dismantle International Cocaine Gang, Seize 10 Tons

Spanish police, working with Colombian authorities, have dealt a significant blow to an international cocaine gang. The operation, codenamed 'Gulupa', resulted in the seizure of ten tons of cocaine and the arrest of five individuals. The gang, operating since 2022, was dismantled due to access to their internal communications via the smartphone app Sky ECC.

The gang, known for its 'invisible' smuggling methods, used shell companies and intermediaries to evade detection. Their operations were coordinated from Colombia, Spain, and Dubai. They had direct links to the Colombian Clan del Golfo, one of the world's largest drug suppliers. Annually, the gang is believed to have smuggled around 120 tons of cocaine into Europe via ports in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain.

The gang's money laundering activities were extensive, totaling approximately $700 million (€603 million). They used offshore companies and cryptocurrency transactions to clean their illicit earnings. The masterminds behind the operation were based in Colombia, Spain, and Dubai. However, the identities of those arrested in Madrid's raids remain unclear, despite the successful targeting of the cocaine ring with Dubai connections.

The 'Gulupa' operation marks a substantial victory against international drug trafficking. The seizure of ten tons of cocaine and the disruption of the gang's money laundering activities will significantly impact the global cocaine trade. The successful infiltration of the gang's communications via the Sky ECC app demonstrates the value of international cooperation in combating transnational criminal organizations.
