Ram 1500 pickups faced a recall of over 1.2 million units due to a fault in the Antilock Brake System (ABS)

In a significant move, Stellantis North America has announced the recall of 1.22 million Ram 1500 pickup trucks. The decision, made on August 31, follows the discovery of a software build issue that can potentially disable the vehicle's electronic stability control (ESC) system in the affected cars.

The affected vehicles were produced between October 31, 2017, and February 14, 2024. The recalled models include the 2019 Ram 1500 trucks and 2021-2024 model year vehicles.

The software malfunction, which is related to the system that controls the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), poses a risk of increased crash likelihood due to the disabling of the ESC system in the cars. Stellantis' Technical Service and Customer Support (TSC) team met with its US engineering and manufacturing team from April through June 2024 to review the issue and determine the exact cause.

Dealers will update the ABS module software and, if necessary, replace suspect ABS control modules to correct the defect. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed between October 3-10, and dealer notification letters will be sent on September 12.

It's important to note that this issue is not related to an over-the-air software update and requires a service appointment at a dealer to update the ABS module software in the cars. The ABS module was manufactured by OEM supplier Continental.

ESC systems have been mandated on all passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. since October 2011. This recall marks Stellantis' largest this year and its 44th recall of 2024. The company's recall count is the second highest in 2024, with 44 recalls, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Interestingly, Ford Motor Co. has issued 46 recalls so far in 2024, making it the automaker with the highest recall count. However, it's worth mentioning that the search results do not provide information about the OEM supplier of the ABS module for the affected Ram 1500 pickup cars.

Owners of the affected vehicles are advised to contact their local dealership or Stellantis customer service for more information regarding the recall and the scheduling of a service appointment for their cars.
