Meta Bans Political Ads in EU Ahead of TTPA Regulation
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has implemented a ban on political, electoral, and social issue advertisements across its platforms in the European Union. The move, effective October 6, 2025, at 6:00 PM Central European Time, is in response to the EU's Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) Regulation.
The ban, first announced on July 25, 2025, affects advertising on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp within the 27 EU member states and associated territories. It does not impact ads about social issues, elections, or politics served outside the EU. Meta has provided advertisers with approximately two months to prepare for the change.
The prohibition builds upon Meta's existing special ad categories system, which was implemented in 2018 to provide transparency for political advertising. The company has published detailed developer documentation outlining specific changes to several Marketing API endpoints, including POST requests to campaigns, ads, adsets, and adcreatives under ad account IDs.
Meta's decision to prohibit ads about social issues, elections, or politics in the EU follows similar announcements from other major platforms facing compliance challenges with the TTPA framework. The company cited operational challenges and legal uncertainties introduced by the EU's TTPA regulation as the reason for the ban.
