Magna International Shifts to Returnable Packaging for Cost Savings
Magna International is set to benefit from a shift to returnable packaging technology. This move, led by Director of Packaging Continuous Improvement Bridget Grewal, aims to reduce reinvestment and disposal costs. Currently, the company uses expendable packaging for international shipments, which is not cost-effective due to end-of-life disposal and recycling costs.
Grewal has implemented standardized packaging procedures and integrated ISPM15 compliance checks into the supply chain processes. She has also enhanced employee training programs to ensure adherence to ISPM15 standards. Magna International has trained internal material handlers and engineering groups to mitigate phytosanitary risks, which can cause significant damage and stop shipments. The company has experienced phytosanitary failures from Europe and Mexico in the past.
Grewal spoke about these packaging improvements at the Automotive Logistics and Supply Chain Global event. She highlighted the importance of staying updated on global regulations, such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) coming into effect at the end of 2023. Tracking shipments is also crucial in logistics, with the industry moving towards sensor technology for better visibility. Magna International has ensured supply base adherence to ISPM15 standards to further mitigate phytosanitary risks.
By adopting returnable packaging technology, Magna International stands to reduce costs and improve supply chain efficiency. The company's commitment to staying updated on global regulations and mitigating phytosanitary risks demonstrates a proactive approach to packaging management.
