IRCC Slashes Immigration Backlog to 821,200 in February 2025
As of February 28, 2025, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has seen a significant decrease in its application backlog. The total number of applications awaiting processing stood at 821,200, marking the third consecutive month below the 1 million mark.
This reduction is a result of several measures taken by IRCC to tackle the backlog. These include digital transformation of application processes, prioritization of certain applications, increased resources for processing, improved internal processes, and informational campaigns to prevent incomplete applications.
The family sponsorship backlog remains within projections at 14%. However, the Express Entry backlog stands at 25%, higher than the department's target of 20%. Despite this, IRCC has processed 1,208,200 applications within service standards, out of a total inventory of 2,029,400. The backlog for Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) applications has risen to 36% as of February 28, 2025.
The backlog has decreased by 7.95% compared to January 2025, indicating progress in IRCC's efforts to manage the application queue. However, continued vigilance and further improvements are needed to meet the target backlog levels for all categories.
