BMW Currently Overburdened, Prioritizing Other Projects Over Supercar Development
BMW M's High-Performance Cars Take Priority Over Halo Supercar
BMW Motor Leon-Serieux, the CEO of BMW M, has cast doubt on the imminent release of a new halo supercar during an appearance at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. Van Meel stated that while BMW has not given up on the idea of a standalone supercar, it is currently focusing on its high-performance models and will only consider such a project when it finds the "right window of opportunity."
BMW's current priorities involve redesigning its entire lineup with a new design ethos and incorporating various degrees of electrification. The division responsible for such projects, M, must also manage the expectations of enthusiasts with the introduction of battery-electric versions of popular models, like the M3. The backlash experienced by Mercedes-AMG due to the use of four-cylinder engines in models previously equipped with V8s serves as a cautionary tale.
Furthermore, BMW's overall net profit dipped by 37% in the last year due to challenges in China and global tariff issues. These factors have created an unpropitious environment for producing a new halo supercar. However, van Meel reiterated that M remains dreamers in this regard and will pursue the project whenever BMW Group gives the green light.
In an interview with BMW Blog during the panel discussion, van Meel did not rule out the possibility of a supercar from BMW but admitted that such a project would depend on market demand and capacity. Developers continue to fine-tune the concept, with the assistance of BMW M Design head Oliver Heilmer, but no production-ready model has surfaced as of yet.
If and when BMW decides to introduce a new halo supercar, it could debut at events such as the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. For now, enthusiasts will have to wait as the company concentrates on establishing itself in the post-Neue Klasse era, catering to a diverse range of powertrains in its ever-evolving lineup.
It is worth noting that any subsequent halo supercar from BMW will likely be priced exorbitantly, possibly entering the million-dollar range to justify the investment. Conversely, any potential supercar may only represent a limited production run, without significantly departing from BMW's existing lineup.
While fans of BMW's high-performance models will have to remain patient, they can take solace in the fact that the iconic brand has steered clear of making the same mistakes in the past. BMW's expensive misstep with the XM serves as a reminder that the company is unlikely to repeat the misstep with a new halo supercar.
