Brussels Makes History: First Major European City to Go Emission-Free Daily Postal Service
bpost has made history in Brussels, becoming the first major European city to operate a completely emission-free daily postal service. The transition, which involved 565 electric vans and 57 electric bikes with attached trailers, is a significant step towards improving air quality and mobility in the regions.
The project, made possible through collaboration with the Brussels-Capital Region, all 19 municipalities, Innoviris, and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, has seen bpost replace its traditional fuel vehicles with a zero-emission fleet for regular letter and parcel rounds across all 19 municipalities in Brussels. This comprehensive transition has not been achieved by any other European city to date.
To facilitate the change, 409 charging stations were installed across delivery centers in Brussels. bpost postmen and postwomen now deliver on-foot, using electric bikes and trailers, and electric vans. This switch is expected to save 750 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Brussels' commitment to sustainability has been further solidified with bpost's transition to a zero-emission fleet. The Brussels-Capital Region's initiatives, such as this one, are actively working to improve air quality and mobility in the city.
