Intensifying Aggression: Russia's Attacks on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure
Zelenskyy urges intensified pressure on Russia prior to G7 meeting
In a bold new chapter of the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sounded the alarm, urging the G7 nations to ratchet up pressure on Russia before their summit in Canada. The alarm stems from Moscow's continued aggression against Ukraine's civilian energy facilities, despite Putin's assurances to the USA and other peacemakers.
Zelensky, following a meeting with military officials, denounced this escalating terror, stating it's becoming increasingly cunning and insidious. The President believes that Russia is utilizing the current media focus on the war between Iran and Israel to launch attacks on Ukraine, without any signs of impending peace or even a willingness to engage in sincere diplomacy from Moscow.
In an attempt to expose Putin's duplicity, Zelensky revealed that Kyiv has disclosed information about a potential Russian threat to Ukraine's nuclear power infrastructure to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as well as the USA. However, he didn't disclose specifics of the threat. This revelation is particularly unsettling given Putin's attempts to position himself as a mediator in the Middle East.
Tightening the Screw: Zelensky's Demands to G7
According to Zelensky, the combat against sanctions circumvention should be intensified, a task that the G7 nations, including Germany, are well-equipped to handle. He suggests imposing severe penalties on banks and the financial sector, causing tangible pain to Russia. Furthermore, he reiterates his call for a "genuine oil price cap", aiming to reduce Russia's revenue from energy sales.
As a guest at the meeting, Zelensky views the G7 summit as a crucial platform to rally his allies into providing more military and financial support to Ukraine in its fight against the relentless Russian invasion.
Escalating Conflict: Recent Russian Aggression
Despite previous sanctions, Russia's war against Ukraine has been ongoing for over three years. The frequency of attacks has increased notably recently. According to Zelensky, neighboring Russia has deployed approximately 2,800 drones, nearly 3,000 guided bombs, and 140 rockets and cruise missiles against Ukraine since the beginning of this month. The heaviest attack occurred on June 14-15, when Russia hit the Poltava Oblast region with two Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, one Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missile, four Iskander-K cruise missiles, and four Kalibr cruise missiles. These attacks, followed by around 183 Shahed and decoy drones, targeted energy, agricultural, and civilian infrastructure in the region.[1]
The primarily targeted city was Krementschuk, where Russian forces have been relentlessly shelling an oil processing plant since the start of the conflict. According to the authorities, miraculously, no casualties were reported. Nevertheless, Zelensky highlighted damage to the energy infrastructure in his evening video message.[4] The Russian Ministry of Defense also reported on the attacks.
Ukrainian Countermeasures: Hitting Back Deep
In a remarkable display of proactive resistance, Ukrainian intelligence operatives have executed countermeasures against Russian targets. On June 14, they successfully sabotaged an electrical substation in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, causing power disruptions to military and industrial facilities in the region.[5] This covert operation underscores Ukraine's ability to conduct operations deep within Russian territory and challenge Russia's rear defenses.
Future Threats: The Looming Shadow
Ukraine has warned of further Russian attacks on its energy sector, sharing this critical intelligence with international organizations and influential figures.[4] The potential for further escalation and instability in the region continues to be a major concern. On the strategic front, Russia's focus on Ukraine's energy sector may be part of an elaborate strategy to weaken Ukraine's ability to resist ongoing military pressure, while Ukraine and its allies respond by reinforcing defenses and exploring ways to disrupt Russian operations.
