Commencement of wind energy generating facilities - Wind turbine explosions have commenced
In the picturesque Harz district of Germany, the Druiberg Wind Farm, the oldest in Saxony-Anhalt, is undergoing a significant transformation. Established 25 years ago, this wind farm is now embarking on a modernization process known as repowering, which involves upgrading or replacing older wind turbines with newer, more efficient models.
The repowering process for the Druiberg Wind Farm began in earnest after its approval in February 2022. Preparatory activities, such as tree clearances, have signalled the start of construction and upgrade works that will transform the wind farm into a modernized facility with enhanced capacity.
The key impact of repowering is an increase in energy output and efficiency. By installing newer turbines with advanced technology and higher capacity, the wind farm can generate more electricity from the same site area compared to the older installations. This leads to improved utilization of wind resources and supports broader renewable energy goals.
The Druiberg Wind Farm's operator, Enercon, plans to replace the older turbines with 13 new ones as part of the repowering process. As a result, the number of turbines at the wind farm will be halved, but the wind farm's capacity will more than double. The mayor of Dardesheim, Ralf Voigt, signed a major contract with Enercon for the expansion of the wind farm in March of this year.
The Druiberg Wind Farm currently produces more than 40 times the electricity needed by the town's 800 residents and businesses each year. With the repowering, it is expected to produce even more electricity, contributing significantly to the state's renewable energy targets.
It is worth noting that Saxony-Anhalt is home to approximately 2,750 wind energy installations, with a total capacity of about 5,500 megawatts. The Druiberg Wind Farm is among the ten largest wind farms in the state.
Safety measures are in place for the demolition and replacement process, ensuring minimal disruption to the local environment and community. More demolitions are expected in the coming weeks at the Druiberg Wind Farm.
The repowering of the Druiberg Wind Farm is a testament to the commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development in Saxony-Anhalt. As the wind farm transitions from its initial setup to a modernized facility, it sets a promising example for other wind farms looking to increase their capacity and efficiency.
The repowering process, overseen by Enercon, includes the installation of 13 new, more efficient wind turbines, which will lead to an increase in financial returns for the wind farm through greater energy output. With the advancement in vocational training and technology in the renewable-energy industry, this modernized facility will contribute significantly to the community policy encouraging sustainable energy and energy self-sufficiency.
