Volkswagen's Wolfsburg Plant Transforms into an Electric Vehicle Hub

In a significant move towards electrification, Volkswagen's main plant in Wolfsburg will undergo a transformation starting in 2027, becoming a key hub for the production of electric vehicles (EVs).

The iconic VW Golf, currently built in Wolfsburg, is expected to leave the city in two years, with production shifting to Mexico. However, the plant's importance to Volkswagen remains undiminished, as it will become the primary centre for EV production in Europe.

The plant's transformation is centred around the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which is considered the backbone of Volkswagen's E-offensive. Two of the four assembly lines in the main plant will be converted to SSP, enabling the production of future electric models, including the electric Golf and electric T-Roc, with an anticipated annual production of over 500,000 units.

Volkswagen has emphasised its commitment to making Wolfsburg the heart of its transition to electric vehicles. The plant will play a crucial role in developing and manufacturing affordable, high-quality, and profitable EVs for the European market. This aligns with Volkswagen's broader strategy to accelerate electric mobility and software-defined vehicle technology.

The plant's transformation was discussed at a works meeting on June 3rd, with VW works council chief Daniela Cavallo proposing a potential four-day week as a scenario from 2027. However, the potential four-day week might not be well received by employees, who are already working overtime to fill employee hour accounts for potential benefits in 2027.

Media reports suggest that the plant could be underutilized for years after the rebuild starting in 2027, but Volkswagen's focus remains on making Wolfsburg a major EV hub, retaining its significance within the Volkswagen Group as a site for innovation, large-scale EV production, and software-driven automotive development.

The Wolfsburg Plant, as Volkswagen's primary center for EV production in Europe, will significantly contribute to the company's E-offensive in the industry. The plant's transformation into an electric vehicle hub also includes the production of future EV models, such as the electric Golf and electric T-Roc, within the automotive sector, aiming for an annual production of over 500,000 units in finance.
