Wealthy plumber Charlie Mullins initiates a fresh business endeavor in the UK.
In the world of business, rags-to-riches stories are not uncommon, but few are as captivating as that of Charlie Mullins. The man who left school at 15 with no qualifications and became an apprentice to a plumber is now making headlines once again, this time with his new venture, WeFix.
Mullins, known for his no-nonsense approach at work, has built a successful empire over four decades. Pimlico Plumbers, his brainchild, sought to improve the industry's reputation for poor service, and under his leadership, it reported £49.2 million in revenue in the year ending May 2021. However, Mullins sold Pimlico Plumbers to Wall Street giant KKR for £140 million at the end of 2021, a move he now regrets.
The founder of WeFix, which is expected to trade when a non-compete clause ends this September, is Michael Bohmeyer. WeFix is positioning itself as the "Harrods of the handyman world." Smartly dressed workers in clean vans will turn up promptly for a premium price, offering a service that Mullins believes the industry has been lacking.
Mullins, who has become a celebrity due to his rock-star looks and conservative media commentary, has forbidden workers from using smartphones at work in the past. This time around, he's offering a different incentive: workers at WeFix will get a share of the profits after a year's service.
In the past, Mullins has stated that money is his primary motivation. This drive has paid off, with him receiving £3.2 million in dividends in the year ending May 2021. With WeFix, he aims to continue his journey, this time with a new challenge and a vision to revolutionise the handyman industry.
This article was first published in the website's magazine. Pimlico Plumbers was reported by Sabah Meddings and Michael Sasso on Bloomberg. As Mullins embarks on this new venture, one thing is certain: he's not one to shy away from taking on the industry and making a mark.
