Waffle House abolishes the additional cost for eggs in their menu items.
In a welcome relief for customers, popular American diner chain Waffle House has announced the removal of the egg surcharge from its menu, effective from June 2, 2025. This decision comes after a significant drop in egg prices, which had reached a record high earlier this year.
The egg surcharge, amounting to 50 cents per egg, was introduced by Waffle House in February 2025 due to a severe outbreak of bird flu and subsequent supply issues that led to soaring egg prices. However, with egg prices now falling, the chain has decided to drop the additional cost.
The price of a dozen large white-shell eggs has dropped from a peak of $6.23 in March 2025 to around $2.56 by July 2025. This decline in prices has been instrumental in enabling businesses like Waffle House to cut back on surcharges and additional charges added to offset market volatility.
Waffle House, which serves approximately 272 million eggs annually, has been one of the most affected businesses due to the high egg prices. The chain's most-ordered item is eggs, making the surcharge a significant additional cost.
The drop in egg prices is a result of broader efforts, including government strategies to improve biosecurity and increase imports, which have helped ease egg supply constraints and reduce costs. The US Agriculture Secretary, Brooke Rollins, has implemented a five-pronged strategy aimed at improving biosecurity on the farm and lowering egg prices.
The removal of the egg surcharge was announced on Waffle House's social media platforms with an X post stating, "Egg-cellent news...as of June 2, the egg surcharge is officially off the menu. Thanks for understanding!"
While egg prices are still higher than they were a year ago, the decline has been substantial enough to warrant the removal of the surcharge. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has reported that egg prices, while still higher than a year before, have experienced a significant decline.
This development is a positive sign for both consumers and businesses and marks a step towards normalcy in the food industry. As egg prices continue to stabilize, more businesses may follow Waffle House's lead in removing surcharges and passing the savings onto their customers.
The drop in egg prices, a result of improved biosecurity and increased imports, has allowed businesses like Waffle House to reduce additional charges, such as the egg surcharge, on their food-and-drink offerings. With the surcharge now removed, customers can expect a more affordable lifestyle when dining at Waffle House, a move that is indicative of stabilizing prices in the food-and-drink industry and a step towards normalcy within the wider business and finance sectors.
