Volkswagen unveils additional insights about the 2024 Transporter and Caravelle models
The latest iteration of the iconic Volkswagen Transporter and Caravelle is here, offering a versatile and modern powertrain lineup to cater to a wide range of needs. With a focus on versatility, efficiency, and innovation, these vehicles are poised to make a significant impact in both the commercial and passenger transport markets.
Diesel engines take centre stage, with three 2.0-litre TDI options available, producing 110 hp, 150 hp, and 170 hp (or 108 bhp, 148 bhp, and 168 bhp depending on the source). These engines can be paired with either a manual or automatic transmission, providing flexibility for different driving styles and preferences.
For those seeking a more eco-friendly option, the new Transporter and Caravelle models offer a choice between plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and all-electric powertrains. The PHEV model, featuring a 2.5-litre petrol engine combined with an electric motor and battery, delivers a total system output of around 232 hp. It offers an electric-only range estimated between 30 to 35 miles, making it suitable for short urban trips while providing combustion power for longer journeys.
The all-electric (e-Transporter) variant is another eco-friendly choice, available with three output levels—136 hp, 218 hp, and 286 hp—and equipped with a 64-65 kWh battery pack. The estimated real-world electric driving range is approximately 150 to 180 miles, with an official WLTP figure around 201-209 miles. This electric variant is particularly well-suited for city driving due to its smooth and near-silent operation.
Additional features include four-wheel drive as standard on the rugged Panamericana trim, enhancing off-road capability suited for mild trails or construction sites. Multiple body styles, two wheelbase lengths, and two roof heights provide flexibility tailored to different uses, including the passenger-focused Caravelle.
The Caravelle, designed for commercial passenger transport, seats nine and is available in three trims: basic, mid-range, and premium. Notable features in the mid-range Life trim include body-coloured bumpers, exterior mirror housings, and door handles. The Caravelle also comes equipped with side and curtain airbags in the cab.
The new Transporter measures 5,050mm in length, an increase of 146mm compared to the T6.1 model. The width between the wheel housings has increased to 1392mm, providing more space for loading Euro pallets. For those opting for the extended wheelbase Transporter, the load compartment length extends to 3002mm. The load compartment length on the floor of the standard wheelbase model Transporter has been extended to 2602mm, offering an additional 61mm of space.
In summary, the new Transporter and Caravelle bring a comprehensive range of powertrain options from traditional diesel to advanced electrified models, catering to both commercial and passenger transport markets with an emphasis on versatility and efficiency. These vehicles are set to redefine the van market with their innovative features and eco-friendly powertrains.
