The fifth in a line of slick German Navy corvettes, the Augsburg, has just been blessed with a badass christening in the heart of Hamburg, as announced by shipyard group Lürssen from Bremen. The ship's final tweaks and tests will be carried out at Blohm+Voss before it's handed over to the Navy – no exact date has been given yet.

Augsburg's Mayor Eva Weber (CSU) celebrated this moment, stating, "The christening of the Augsburg corvette is a significant symbol of our city's strong bond with the German Navy."

The Augsburg is part of the Braunschweig class 130, with the Navy having commissioned five vessels between 2008 and 2013. In 2017, an order for five additional corvettes followed, with Lürssen leading the charge on construction. Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and German Naval Yards, both based in Kiel, are also part of the project.

Only the Lübeck corvette remains to be christened.

According to Lürssen, the five new corvettes are currently undergoing refinements at Blohm+Voss. The Augsburg joins the Cologne, Emden, and Karlsruhe in the lineup after their christenings. The christening of the Lübeck is still pending. These ships are designed and equipped for stellar performance in coastal operations, particularly in the North and Baltic Seas, positioned for reconnaissance and combat missions.
