Vietnam took a proactive step in bolstering its capacity to enforce rules of origin with a seminar held in Geneva on Tuesday. The event was jointly hosted by Vietnam's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and other international organisations.

Ambassador Mai Phan Duỷ, permanent representative of Vietnam's mission, gave opening remarks, emphasising the foundational role of rules of origin in international trade. The seminar aimed to help Vietnam effectively realise its international commitments amidst global trade and supply chain challenges.

Deputy Director of the Foreign Trade Agency, Trịnh Thi Thu Hiền, highlighted the importance of capacity building for enforcement officers in the context of deep international integration. The workshop, coordinated with the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Foreign Trade Agency, supported Vietnam's trade and economic integration.

The seminar focused on the rules of origin and their role in global commerce. Greater transparency and fairness in the enforcement of origin rules were ensured among participants. Expert responses helped strengthen knowledge, skills, and confidence among participants.

During the seminar, Vietnamese officials discussed mechanisms for international cooperation and settlement of real-world challenges in issuing certificates of origin. The purpose of the workshop was to learn from international best practices in resolving origin-related trade disputes.

Earlier this year, Vietnam notified the WTO of its updated non-preferential rules of origin, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and cooperation with other WTO members. Since joining the WTO in 2007, Vietnam has developed a legal framework on goods origin that aligns with international standards.

Participants at the workshop included management personnel from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Finance, certificate of origin (C/O) issuing agencies, and provincial departments of industry and trade. The seminar provided opportunities for learning from international best practices in resolving origin-related trade disputes.

While the name of the expert from the Advisory Centre on WTO Law who participated in the discussions about the rules of origin at the seminar in Geneva is not provided in the available search results, their contributions undoubtedly added valuable insights to the proceedings.

In conclusion, the seminar marked a significant step in Vietnam's proactive approach to strengthening its capacity in enforcing rules of origin. The event underscored Vietnam's commitment to transparency, cooperation, and capacity building, positioning the country well for its continued success in the global trade arena.
