Cosmos Subscription Rules and Guidelines
Welcome to Cosmos, a platform offering various subscription types for Azure Cosmos DB, Stanford's Cosmos data platform, and WunderGraph Cosmo Managed Service. Here's a breakdown of the main subscription types and their terms.
Azure Cosmos DB Subscriptions
- Provisioned Throughput Account: This subscription type requires a commitment to a specific throughput capacity measured in Request Units per second (RU/s). You are billed for the provisioned throughput amount regardless of actual usage during each billing period.
- Serverless Account: With no minimum throughput or capacity planning, you are only billed for the RUs consumed by your database operations and the storage used. Serverless containers can handle thousands of requests per second without pre-provisioning charges.
- Free Tier Account: Azure Cosmos DB offers a free tier providing 1000 RU/s and 25 GB storage per account per subscription. This is limited to one free tier account per Azure subscription. The free tier is not compatible with the serverless capacity mode.
Key limitations with the serverless account include no support for free tier discounts, geo-redundancy, multi-region writes, or availability zones. Additional configurations like networking, backup policies, and encryption can be set up as per user needs. Billing is based exclusively on RU consumption and storage usage.
Stanford Medicine Cosmos Access Levels (Data Subscription Types)
- Aggregate-level Access: This level allows cohort discovery and feasibility analysis using the Slicer Dicer tool in the Cosmos Portal, suitable for high-level data queries.
- Line-level Access (SQL): This grants detailed, line-level data access via SQL tools. Requires completion of Epic COS305 ($200) and COS500 ($600) for a total of $800. This credential is for data architects.
- Line-level Data Science Tools Access (R or Python): Offers programmatic, line-level access for advanced analysis using R or Python. Requires Epic COS305 ($200) and COS550 ($200), totaling $400, designed for data scientists.
These access levels require proper certification and approval, with requests submitted via email alongside certification proof. The Cosmos data includes de-identified patient information with some data transformations like date shifting for privacy. Use of the platform is governed by specific "rules of the road."
WunderGraph Cosmo Managed Service Subscription:
This is a paid cloud subscription service with defined feature and usage limits on a monthly usage period basis. Customers may purchase non-refundable usage limit extensions valid only during the current usage period. Any unused extension credits expire at the end of the month, and limits revert to standard levels.
