Something's Up with the American Supply Chain: Here's What's Going On

Unveiling the Intricacies of Supply Chains: A Conversation with Lana Constantine

Get the inside scoop on the chaos plaguing the supply chain from Gardenuity's very own supply chain expert, Lana Constantine.

'Tis sad, but true: the American supply chain headache is real. Whether you've heard it on the news, read about it in the papers, or experienced it yourself, it won't take a genius to figure out what's going on. We've managed to bag a chat with Lana Constantine, Gardenuity's Senior Vice President and supply chain Guru, to get the lowdown on what the supply chain actually is, what's happening (ugh), and when things might return to some semblance of normal.

What's a Supply Chain, You Ask?

In layman's terms, a supply chain is the intricate network of manufacturing, assembling, and delivering the products we're all clamoring over. That's right—it includes pretty much everything from the tiniest components to the extravagant packaging for whatever goodies we want to snap up. And yes, don't forget that it also entails the procurement of raw materials, transporting them from their origin to vendors, and finally, to our eager hands.

So, What's the Deal with the Supply Chain Right Now?

Well, buckle up! We've got the unfortunate trifecta of raw material shortages and labor shortages hitting the scene. Oh, and to top it all off—try to imagine the freaking Titanic while this monstrous backlog of shipping containers makes its way from those ginormous cargo ships into shipyards, onto trains and trucks—the works.

Why Now, You Wondering?

You gotta hand it to chance and its cruel sense of humor: it takes an intricate series of unfortunate events to create the supply chain issues we're currently facing. The pandemic, unfortunately, hit in several fashions. Factories and containers focused on creating and shipping PPE worldwide—regardless of whether they were in the business or not. Then, there was the economic slowdown, furloughs, quarantines, and good old uncertainty.

As things slowly started to open back up, consumers switched gears and ramped up online shopping, increasing demand for packaging and shipping. Add in the blockage of the Suez Canal, a labor shortage, a backlog at American ports, noise ordinances preventing shipyards from operating 24/7—poof! You've got yourself a perfect storm.

Effects on Gardenuity

Garden enthusiasts rejoice! The supply chain issues may be a pain, but the good news is that our strong relationships with our vendors have helped us stay (mostly) afloat. Prices of materials have skyrocketed by 10-40% across the board, and the cost of shipping goods from overseas has shot up as much as four times from a year ago. Delivery times are also double, with no guarantees. But hey, we'll take what we can get!

Shopping During the Holiday Season

Guess what? With the advent of COVID, online shopping is king. But, as with any king, it comes with its own set of challenges. So, remember, the early bird catches the worm (or the plants, in Gardenuity's case). Shop early and save yourself the frustration of missing out on those perfectly placed flowers and green thumbs.

If you're based in Dallas, swing by Gardenuity's storefront for a personal experience and a chance to avoid shipping woes altogether. As for other stores, there's no time like the present to pop in instead of procrastinating and hoping for the best.

Gardenuity's Tips for Navigating the Holiday Season

You guessed it—thanksgiving for the wise, my friends. Order early, order often (or at least don't wait until the last minute). Plus, if you're local to Gardenuity's headquarters in Dallas, come on down and snag your order in person to save yourself the shipping drama.

What's the Forecast for the Future of the Supply Chain?

Well, unfortunately, my crystal ball-wielding friends, it doesn't look too rosy. The combination of ongoing coronavirus variants spreading across the globe, increasing globalization, and the fragility of our beloved supply chains means we can expect to be bumping along this tough terrain for a while. But, hey—first world problems, amirite?

This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity. You're welcome.
