United Arab Emirates Holds Third Electric Vehicle Conference to Expedite Electric Mobility Development
In a significant step towards achieving its Net Zero 2050 goal, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and key partners, including UAEV and private sector entities, are driving a multi-faceted approach to sustainable transport and electric vehicles (EVs).
On Monday, the 3rd EV Majlis was held, where stakeholders gathered to discuss the future of sustainable transport in the UAE. Chaired by Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI and Chairman of UAEV, the event fostered collaboration between public and private sectors to fast-track the shift to sustainable mobility.
The UAE is taking the lead in global energy efficiency improvements through its chairmanship of the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA). This ambitious international platform, launched at COP29, aims to double the energy efficiency rate to over 4% annually by 2030, thereby supporting decarbonization efforts across sectors, including transport.
In terms of EV infrastructure, the UAE plans to install over 500 charging stations by 2025. This expansion is linked to strategic joint ventures such as Tellus Power MENA, which develops advanced Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, allowing EVs to stabilize renewable energy grids and integrate sustainable transport with clean energy systems.
Beyond battery EVs, hydrogen-powered vehicles are also being explored. BMW's iX5 Hydrogen fleet is being tested in the UAE, with the collaboration between BMW and ADNEC including the use of hydrogen vehicles for COP28 and the development of the region’s first high-speed green hydrogen refueling station.
The UAE is also leveraging joint ventures and partnerships to develop a robust EV manufacturing and charging infrastructure supply chain, positioning itself as a regional hub for advanced clean mobility technologies. This approach emphasizes green industrial growth and export potential, aligned with the Ministry of Investment’s foreign direct investment targets.
State-backed entities like ENOC are also aligned with the Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative, potentially facilitating the integration of sustainable energy solutions within transport and infrastructure sectors.
