U.S. pressure looming before trade agreement, Modi promotes 'Homegrown' initiatives
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a national movement to support local products, emphasising the importance of "Swadeshi" or buying products made in India, as a means to strengthen the domestic economy amid rising global economic instability and increased trade tensions, particularly with the US.
Speaking at a public meeting in Varanasi, Modi urged all citizens, political parties, shopkeepers, and traders to prioritise Indian-made goods, especially during major economic activities like festive and wedding seasons. This approach, he said, is not only an economic priority but also a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
The Prime Minister's push for 'Swadeshi' has come after the US announced a 25% tariff to allow Indian products into the American market and threatened a penalty for buying crude oil from Russia. Modi framed the current global economic uncertainties, including the US’s tariff impositions on around 70 countries, as an opportunity for India to strengthen its domestic economy by promoting local industries, farmers, and youth employment.
Modi stressed that government efforts alone are insufficient and that national economic transformation requires active citizen participation. He made a special appeal to traders and shopkeepers to adopt Swadeshi and sell only Indian goods. The Prime Minister assured that the government accords top priority to protect the interests of farmers, medium, and small enterprises.
Modi's call for Swadeshi aligns with the goal of protecting and developing India's indigenous manufacturing and small industries, potentially reducing dependency on imports and mitigating adverse impacts from trade tensions with the US. This approach can help Indian industries grow in scale and competitiveness, potentially cushioning India’s economy from external shocks due to tariff wars.
Modi also placed this approach within a broader nationalistic and cultural context, urging citizens to see it as a national service and collective responsibility. He urged every Indian, regardless of political affiliation, to work in the national interest and promote the spirit of Swadeshi.
