U.S.-India trade negotiations persist, reports Piyush Goyal
The first phase of the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) is making significant strides, with negotiators reporting agreements on key areas such as agricultural issues, energy purchases, and non-tariff barriers. These critical stepping stones are paving the way for the initial completion of the deal, which is expected to be concluded by fall 2025.
The current trade between the two nations stands at approximately $190 billion annually, and the upcoming agreement aims to substantially boost this figure, opening new avenues for sectors like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, engineering, textiles, footwear, and electronics in India. This first phase or "first tranche" is targeted for completion around September-October 2025, setting the stage for a more comprehensive agreement later in the year or soon after.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, speaking at the Italy-India Business Forum, emphasized the need to promote seamless trade and investments between India and Italy. He believes there is tremendous potential for growth in the trade relationship between the two countries, currently at the $15 billion level. The India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) is seen as an opportunity for India and Italy to come closer together.
While the US administration is optimistic about the deal, describing ongoing discussions as productive, some diplomatic complexities remain, such as the sensitive India-Pakistan relationship, which has influenced the negotiation dynamics.
Meanwhile, Goyal also expressed the need for concrete steps to expedite the conclusion of the free trade agreement between India and the European Union. He stated that India does not negotiate at the gunpoint and timely restrictions are good as they encourage swift talks, but the country will not be hasty if it cannot protect its interests. The free trade agreement between India and the EU, if concluded, could deepen economic ties between the two sides.
Elsewhere, the Ratha Yatra celebrations are taking place, and Odia cine star Archita is involved in the festivities. Furthermore, seven yellow anacondas have been born at Odisha's Nandankanan Zoo, adding a new attraction to the famous wildlife sanctuary.
