New Appointment at bft Association: Ulrike Tuchardt to Lead Regulatory Affairs

Ulrike Tuchardt has joined the bft - Federal Association of Independent Tank Stations and Independent German Mineral Oil Traders as the Legal and Regulatory Affairs Advisor, effective from January 1, 2025. In her new role, Tuchardt will be responsible for dealing with the regulatory framework of the energy industry and the fuel station market, particularly in the context of Germany's energy transition ("Energiewende").

Tuchardt brings a wealth of experience in energy policy and communication to her new position. Prior to joining the bft association, she served as an advisor for energy policy and communication at MEW, the Association of Medium-Sized Energy Suppliers in Germany. In her new role, her previous experience is expected to prove invaluable.

The bft association is a key player in the German fuel station market and the mineral oil trading sector. Tuchardt's responsibilities will include representing the political interests of the association in the regulatory framework of the energy industry and the fuel station market.

The regulatory environment that Tuchardt will navigate is complex and multifaceted. It involves compliance with various ministries, including the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). These ministries oversee overall energy policy and environmental and climate protection aspects of the energy sector, respectively.

One of the main challenges Tuchardt will face is the phase-out of fossil fuels like coal and lignite by 2038, and nuclear power by 2023. This shift towards renewable energy sources and increased energy efficiency will have a significant impact on fuel station operations that depend on mineral oil products.

Tuchardt's role will also involve dealing with legal provisions such as the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and the Renewable Energies Heat Act (EEWärmeG), which promote renewable electricity and heat generation, potentially influencing fuel demand and diversification at independent stations.

Additionally, Tuchardt will need to adapt to policy adjustments that indirectly affect fuel markets via changes in energy consumption patterns and additional electrification trends. This includes ongoing debates around subsidies for renewable energies, such as solar PV subsidies, and the development of new energy infrastructure, including hydrogen projects supported by recent legislation like the Hydrogen Acceleration Act.

In summary, Tuchardt’s regulatory environment will involve navigating the energy transition framework, managing compliance with evolving renewable energy promotion, fossil fuel phase-outs, and new fuel and infrastructure alternatives (e.g., hydrogen), as well as adapting to shifts in subsidy regimes and market regulations that influence independent fuel stations and mineral oil trading in Germany.

The bft association's focus on regulatory affairs and the energy industry is a key area of interest for Tuchardt in her new role. Her expertise in energy policy and communication will contribute to the association's advocacy efforts in the energy industry and the fuel station market.

Ulrike Tuchardt's role at the bft association will require her to work closely with the finance sector, considering the financial implications of German energy transition policies.

With her extensive experience in energy policy, Tuchardt's new position also invites her to engage with relevant stakeholders in the energy business, collaborating to navigate complex regulatory frameworks in the industry.
