Trump imposes $100,000 visa payment for designated category, US immigration
On September 19, 2025, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced a significant change to the H1B visa category, proposing an annual fee of 100,000 US dollars. However, President Donald Trump's spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, later clarified that this fee is a one-time payment, not an annual one.
This new regulation has increased the H1B visa fee from a few thousand dollars to $100,000. The aim is to make it unprofitable for U.S. companies to hire and train inexperienced employees, as the cost of hiring foreign workers may now significantly increase. Companies will have to assess whether a job candidate is valuable enough to pay the government an additional $100,000 on top of their salary.
The H1B visas are used by American businesses to bring in qualified employees. A significant portion of these visa holders come from India. Critics of President Trump have been claiming that the H1B visa category is being misused and taking jobs away from American employees.
In response to these criticisms, President Trump has imposed a $100,000 fee for the H1B visa. He believes that tech companies would be "very happy" with the new regulation. In fact, in recent months, the CEOs of major tech companies have been trying to build a closer relationship with the Trump administration.
To counterbalance this, the president has also announced immigration-related programs. The "Trump Gold Card" grants permission to stay in the U.S. permanently for $1 million. The platinum card, if issued, will allow one to stay in the U.S. for up to 270 days a year for $5 million, without paying U.S. taxes on income earned outside the U.S. These cards are intended for individuals seeking to reside or stay temporarily in the U.S.
At a White House event, the CEOs of major tech companies praised the U.S. president. A poster next to the president's desk displayed an image of a golden card with Trump's likeness and the Statue of Liberty in the background, representing the "Trump Gold Card."
The increased fee for the H1B visa may affect the hiring of foreign workers by American tech companies. However, the long-term effects of these changes remain to be seen.
