Getting a Charge Out of Nizhny's Electric Legacy

Let's take a trip down memory lane as we celebrate the 78th birthday of Nizhny Novgorod's trolleybus service! The city pulled out all the stops with an exhibition of trolleybuses and electric buses from various domestic and Belarusian manufacturers, covering different eras: gleaming MiNiN E450s, LiAZ-6274s, BKM 32100Ds, Sinara-6254s, PKTS-6281 "Admiral" models, and vintage KTM-2s and ZIU-682Vs, a global icon of mass-produced trolleybus models.

Electric transport in Nizhny Novgorod has played a crucial role within its public transport system, forming the core with metro, trams, electric buses, and trolleybuses. The regional administration has been investing in revamping the electric transport infrastructure and vehicles, with depots and tracks being renovated and new electric buses coming into play. This expansion has enabled trolleybus routes to venture into areas they couldn't previously reach. As we speak, the Riverside District is conducting tests on new trolleybus models, with plans to replace the current fleet once the results are in, according to Dmitry Rybabin, Deputy Minister of Transport and Automobile Roads of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

Alongside the equipment showcase, visitors had the opportunity to immerse themselves in transport-themed activities, including competitions, purchasing souvenirs, and hopping on board the trolleybus parade. The parade route took a scenic journey from Trolleybus Park No.2, through the Moscow Station Tunnel, Volga Embankment, Betankur Street, and back to Trolleybus Park No.2.

The inauguration of trolleybus service in Gorky took place on June 27, 1947, with the first line operating on Sverdlov Street (now Bolshaya Pokrovskaya). MTB-82 trolleybuses cruised Route No.1 from Minin and Pozharsky Square to May 1 Square (now Gorky Square). Trolleybus service in the Riverside District kicked off about a year later, following the route along the Moscow Highway, Berezovaya Street, and Sormovo Highway.

Despite recent reports focusing on military production and regional security incidents in Nizhny Novgorod, there's been a gradual modernization of public transportation systems in Russian cities, including electric trolleybus fleets through updated vehicles or infrastructure upgrades, but more precise details for Nizhny Novgorod remain elusive. Stay tuned for updates on Nizhny Novgorod's electric transport adventures!
