It's been quite a journey since the catastrophic floods in the Eifel region back in 2021. Finally, after four long years of repair and rebuilding, Deutsche Bahn (DB) has officially reopened the Eifel railway line, giving a fresh lease of life to passenger and freight trains across the Eifel region[1]. And the cherry on top? Through services have resumed on the line between Gerolstein and Cologne, bringing these key locations back in full connectivity once again!
The flooding disaster in 2021 left a massive impact, with the Eifel line between Trier-Ehrang and Hürth-Kalscheuren requiring extensive reconstruction. The 160-kilometer route was akin to new construction in places[2].
But today, June 18, 2025, we welcome the return of these vital train services. While there may still be restrictions due to ongoing work, especially electrification of the track[2], we're one step closer to regaining our pre-disaster normalcy.
A press conference is scheduled for Monday, 10:15 AM, at Gerolstein station, where Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz, Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU), and Rhineland-Palatinate’s Minister of Transport Katrin Eder (Greens) will update us on the progress and the future steps[2].
