Catch the unrestricted Whitsun high-speed journey: Mannheim-Stuttgart railway line back in action!
Railway service to resume between Mannheim and Stuttgart during Pentecost holiday - Train Service Resumes on Mannheim-Stuttgart Route During Pentecost
Ready for some zippy Whitsun travel? Great news! The much-awaited high-speed railway line connecting Mannheim and Stuttgart is set to roar back to life on Friday night at 21:00 after undergoing weeks of renovations. The revamped Freudenstein tunnel near Knittlingen (Enzkreis) is all set to go, a rail spokesperson announced. Rest assured, the train journeys will cruise on without a hitch!
This line has been off the tracks since the Easter holidays, throwing a wrench in the travel plans of countless commuters who suffered through longer travel times and even some train cancellations. Passengers across long-distance, regional, and freight trains were diverted, with some connections simply axed. But don't you worry - according to the Pro Bahn passenger association, no one's been griping about the closure, which speaks volumes about the rail service's emergency solutions.
Geology at fault
So, what gave rise to this railway makeover? Well, the primary culprit was some pesky geological problems lurking in the nearly 7km-long Freudenstein tunnel near Knittlingen (Enzkreis). As it turns out, this tunnel cuts right through anhydrite-laden rock prone to expansion following water infiltration. And, as a train spokesperson explained before the work started, those expansions had led to cracks in the tunnel walls on occasion.
To prevent further structural damage, the rail authorities have lined up a series of measures, one of which is the installation of over 1,000 meters of wire nets to secure the tunnel ceiling. The total cost of these renovations? Around 7.5 million euros.
