Train operations halted on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar route following a derailment in Boalkhali
The train service on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar route was disrupted on July 26, 2025, after the guard brake coach of the Cox's Bazar Express got detached from the main train. The incident occurred around 3:15 pm near Gomdondi Station in Boalkhali upazila.
The detachment was due to a hook failure, causing the coach used by the train’s guard and for storing food to separate from the main train shortly after passing Gomdondi Station. The main train stopped for about 30 minutes before continuing its journey, leaving the detached coach behind.
Gomdondi Station Master Anwarul Haque confirmed that the incident was reported to the control room immediately. The detached coach came to a halt near the station's outer signal area, blocking the line and causing delays to subsequent trains, including the Prabal Express scheduled to depart Chattogram for Cox’s Bazar.
No casualties were reported in the incident, and passengers from the detached coach were safely evacuated. A rescue train was dispatched to retrieve the coach, and an engine is being sent to remove the stranded coach from the tracks.
As a result of the incident, train movements were suspended in both directions on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar route. However, normal operations are expected to resume once the coach is removed from the tracks. The incident has also caused uncertainty over train schedules on the Chattogram-Dohazari route, as another freight train carrying furnace oil for a power plant in Dohazari has also been held back.
The Cox's Bazar Express train departed from Cox's Bazar at 12:30 pm, and at the time of the incident, the train was en route to Dhaka. By around 3:45 pm, the rest of the train continued toward Dhaka via Chattogram Railway Station. The isolated coach remained behind on the railway tracks.
The disruption in train service on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar route due to the detachment of a coach impacted not only the Cox's Bazar Express but also the Prabal Express, causing delays. This incident also adversely affected the transportation sector, as a freight train carrying furnace oil for a power plant in Dohazari was held back, causing uncertainty over train schedules on the Chattogram-Dohazari route. Furthermore, the finance industry could be affected due to potential delays in the delivery of the furnace oil, impacting the power plant's operations.
