### A Rich History

The journey of the Block Group began in 1973 with the addition of a butcher’s shop to complement the restaurant business. In the same year, the *Jim Block* brand was created, utilising meat offcuts from Block House's steak production, with a focus on hamburgers. Jim Block now operates 12 restaurants in cities including Hamburg, Berlin, and Hannover[1].

The group ventured into the hotel industry in 1985 with the establishment of the 5-star hotel *Elysée* in Hamburg-Rotherbaum, which was later renovated and enlarged in 2006. It now operates under the name *Grand Elysée*[1].

Expansion outside Germany began in 1996 with the opening of the first restaurant in Malaga, Spain.

### A Thriving Modern Enterprise

Today, the Block Group operates **53 restaurants in Europe**, with 42 in Germany and the others located in Portugal, Spain, and Austria. The company employs about **2,600 people** and is headquartered in Hamburg under the parent company **Eugen Block Holding GmbH**.

Block House restaurants specialise in steaks, while Jim Block focuses on hamburgers, reflecting the group's diversification within the food industry[1].

Christina Block, the eldest sibling of Eugen Block, has taken on a representative role within the group, acting as the public face for the family business, particularly for the Grand Elysée hotel. Christina Block's role is to represent the family to guests and employees, aiming to show that the Block Group is a family business[1].

Dirk Block, Eugen Block's son, was initially part of the company but left in 2011 after ten years. He now runs restaurants for the pizza chain L'Osteria.

The Block Group's operations extend beyond restaurants, with a butcher shop, a logistics center, a fish restaurant with a hotel, and a brewery also under its management[1].
