The popular series 'Neighbors' is abruptly terminated less than two years following its revival.
"It's with a heavy heart that we share the news: Neighbours, the iconic show that first graced our screens in 1985, will be taking a well-deserved break starting from December 2025," the announcement read on social media.
The current season's new episodes will continue to air on Prime Video and Ten, four times a week until the end of the year. Expect all the thrilling twists and turns that Neighbours fans love, with their favorite soap opera characters.
Amazon confirmed in a statement to CNN on Friday that the series will conclude on Prime Video after celebrating its 40th anniversary. The streaming giant had revived the show in 2023, following its initial cancellation in 2022.
While some media outlets speculate that the reason for Neighbours ending after 40 years is due to a lack of a viable broadcast partner, Amazon hasn't officially commented on this. The production is scheduled to cease in July 2025, with the final episode airing in December.
Over the past few decades, Neighbours has featured several renowned actors, such as Kylie Minogue, Liam Hemsworth, Margot Robbie, and Guy Pearce. Fans can look forward to a week of special episodes dedicated to the new and old residents of Ramsay Street in March, celebrating 40 years of Neighbours.
As the news of the show's demise circulated, Neighbours cast members took to social media to express their feelings. Australian actor April Rose Pengilly, who portrayed Chloe Brennan from 2018 to 2024, described the cancellation as "awful."
"Sending love to my @neighbours family today, all the cast and crew, and everyone behind the scenes who works so hard," she wrote on Instagram. "This is especially hard for those going through this a second time – it was devastating when this happened to us in 2022, but a second time is just awful. To all the fans – I know how much the show means to you, and I'm so sorry you have to go through this loss again."
Matt Wilson, who has portrayed Aaron Brennan since 2015, also took to Instagram to thank fans for their support and expressed his feelings about the cancellation. "Seeing how many people love this show and are so passionate that petitions are being made to save the show warms my heart," he wrote.
Sources suggested that the show's move from Freevee to Prime Video was prompted by Amazon's decision to discontinue Freevee, and the subsequent change in executive direction at Amazon MGM Studios also contributed to the decision to end the show[1][3]. Despite its success and a new fanbase in the United States, including a Daytime Emmy nomination, the show could not sustain itself without a stable broadcast arrangement[1].
