Gear Up for Disruptions: East Station Crane Demolition Affects Travel

East Station bridge crane dismantling leads to temporary shutdowns - The demolition of the bridge at East Station causes traffic congestion.

Get ready for some inconvenience, folks! The demolition of a hulking crane at Berlin's bustling East Station means that both train and road traffic will be hit hard in the coming days. The railways have spilled the beans about it. This mammoth steel beast was responsible for years of renovation work at the station and is now meeting its demise in a three-step operation.

From as early as Thursday, 6:00 AM, you'll see Communauté Street, sandwiched between Ostbahn and Am Ostbahnhof, closed off to cars until May 11, 4:00 PM. That's right, no car traffic for you, pal!

Saturday, 4:00 PM, sees the Südhalle of the East Station shutting down for a full 24 hours. Trains on tracks 1 and 3 will cease operation during this period, and long-distance trains won't be stopping at the East Station. Instead, they will start and end at Gesundbrunnen. All other long-distance trains will have the main station as their starting and ending point.

Regional traffic fares are no exception, with lines RE7, RE23, and the airport express feeling the heat. "Expect partial cancellations and detours with stops that may change," warns the railway company. The S-Bahn remains unscathed.

Watch out for road closures between May 14 and 22, too. The Erich-Steinfurt-Straße, Hermann-Stohr-Platz, and Koppenstraße in the vicinity of the railway bridge at the East Station will be barricaded to car traffic.

From May 16 to the early morning of May 19, train traffic on tracks 6 to 11 takes a hit. It's the same old story – all long-distance traffic at the East Station shuts down again. The EC trains to and from Poland will bypass both the main and East stations, choosing to start and end at Gesundbrunnen instead. On May 17 and 18, a shuttle service by bus will operate between Berlin Hauptbahnhof and Frankfurt (Oder).

In regional traffic, the Chicken Little warnings persist. Similar travel restrictions apply as before. However, this time the S-Bahn traffic at the East Station is also taking a break, accompanied by a shuttle service by buses.

So buckle up, Berliners! Make sure to check official transit updates for the latest service adjustments while the crane crumbles to dust. Road users in the area can expect detours as closures become inevitable. Keep your eyes peeled and your sense of humor handy!
