The Gold Behind Your Cryptocurrency: Tether's XAUT

Tether, the company behind popular stablecoins like USDT, recently announced that it holds $770 million worth of gold bullion reserves backing its Tether Gold (XAUT) stablecoin. XAUT, launched in 2020, is a digital asset pegged to the price of one ounce of physical gold.

Each XAUT token promises direct ownership of gold bars held securely in Swiss vaults. According to Paolo Ardoino, Tether's CEO, XAUT is a financial tool that combines the security of physical gold with the efficiency of blockchain technology. The new disclosure comes as the cryptocurrency industry faces scrutiny over stablecoin reserve transparency.

While the specific location of the vaults hasn't been disclosed due to security concerns, Tether reports that third-party audits ensure the gold reserves match the number of XAUT tokens in circulation. In March 2025, Tether announced a new CFO and committed to completing a full audit.

In response to ongoing questions about XAUT's reserves, Tether will continue to provide updates regarding its gold holdings and secure storage. To get the latest news and updates, visit The Daily Hodl.
