Switzerland Sees Surge in New Business Registrations Despite Rise in Bankruptcies
Switzerland has seen a surge in news business registrations, with 40,867 companies starting up from January to September 2025. This marks a 4.3 percent increase from the previous year, despite a significant rise in bankruptcies. A total of 8,387 firms went under during the same period, a 19.5 percent increase from 2024.
The retail sector led the news registrations with 3,287 companies, closely followed by management consulting (3,273) and real estate (2,920). However, the construction industry had the highest number of bankruptcies, with 1,192 cases, followed by hospitality (872) and retail (606).
Experts attribute the increase in bankruptcies partly to a change in the law. Effective January 1, 2025, the law now allows tax debts to be claimed in insolvency proceedings registered in the commercial register. This has led to more businesses facing financial difficulties and ultimately filing for bankruptcy.
While the increase in bankruptcies is a concern, the Swiss economy continues to show resilience with a rise in news business registrations. The retail, management consulting, and real estate sectors are driving this growth. However, the construction industry faces significant challenges, with the highest number of bankruptcies among all sectors.
