Suggestion for Restarting Trans Europ Express 2.0 Train Service, with Routes Traversing Belgium
Unleashing the Trans Europ Express 2.0: Reviving Europe's Iconic High-Speed Train Network
Step back in time with the return of the Trans Europ Express (TEE) in a modern avatar! Known for its first-class railway services operating in Western and Central Europe from 1957 to 1995, the TEE is making a comeback by 2025.
The German government, presently holding the EU presidency, envisions this rebirth to make the train industry more competitive compared to short-haul aviation. To achieve this, the TEE 2.0 will include new routes, connecting at least three to four countries via collaborations between existing rail companies.
Eight potential routes are currently under consideration, such as the Paris-Brussels-Liege-Cologne-Berlin-Warsaw; Amsterdam-Antwerp-Brussels-Paris-Lyon-Barcelona; and Stockholm-Copenhagen-Hamburg-Cologne-Brussels-Paris, among others. Overnight services will also be introduced, replicating the current success of night trains. Plans include overnight trains connecting the likes of Paris-Brussels-Liege-Cologne-Berlin, Brussels-Liege-Cologne-Berlin/(split)Warsaw/Prague, Copenhagen-Hamburg-Cologne-(split)Amsterdam/Brussels-Paris, and Stockholm-Copenhagen-Hamburg-Cologne-Brussels-Paris.
Eurostar and Thalys, two high-speed rail giants open to merging, are likely to pave the way for TEE 2.0's implementation. Austrian Railways, too, are collaborating with other companies to establish themselves as the leading night-train provider in Europe.
With the TEE 2.0, Brussels will become accessible from Barcelona in just 8 hours and Warsaw in under 12 hours. Other notable proposed routes include a Brussels-Copenhagen route of 8:15 hours and a Brussels-Stockholm route of 13 hours.
The proposed TEE 2.0 aims to revolutionize European transportation by prioritizing speed, quality, and sustainability. As countries increasingly focus on reducing carbon emissions, TEE 2.0 is set to offer a greener alternative to air travel with its electrified lines, energy-efficient rolling stock, and integrated multi-modal travel options.
While details are still unfolding as TEE 2.0 moves through planning stages, it represents a significant bid to rejuvenate international rail travel across Europe. Watch this space for details on finalized routes, partnerships, travel times, and ticketing models. Keep those trains a-rolling, Europe!
The German government, aiming to make the train industry more competitive, plans to introduce the TEE 2.0, a modern version of the Trans Europ Express. This eco-friendly transportation system seeks to offer a greener alternative to air travel, with electrified lines, energy-efficient rolling stock, and integrated multi-modal travel options, all as part of the effort to reduce carbon emissions in the finance sector.
