This year marks a significant milestone for Croppers, a venerable establishment that has provided quality grooming services to the Norwich community for five decades. Established in 1974, the barbershop initially operated from Lower Goat Lane before relocating to 5 St Gregory's Alley in 1975.
The venture commenced when Nick, a seasoned barber from Shepherd's Bush, London, recognized an opportunity to share his skills in Norwich. Accompanied by his wife, who took charge as the shop's Saturday assistant, Nick laid the foundation for Croppers, grounded in quality, service, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Over the years, it blossomed into much more than just a barbershop, evolving into an integral part of the community, connecting generations of loyal customers.
Currently run by Nick's sons, Mike and Steve, the barbershop balances tradition and modernity, ensuring it remains relevant in an ever-changing world. "We see ourselves as a family business that warmly welcomes everyone, regardless of their background or age," assert Mike and Steve.
As Nick retired twenty years ago, passing the reins to his sons, they introduced modernizations without sacrificing the shop's core values. This balance between tradition and innovation has allowed Croppers to maintain its charm while staying adaptable.
The recent 50th-anniversary celebration underscored the community Croppers has built. "We had no idea how many people would attend – we questioned if we'd bought too much or too little," shared Mike and Steve. By 4:30 pm, the shop was bustling with over 200 guests, including longtime customers, former staff, and friends, filling the barbershop and spilling out onto the street. The evening was enlivened by a loyal customer-turned-DJ, providing hours of entertainment to the lively partygoers.
The anniversary institution was particularly memorable for Nick, who was honored by friends, family, and both current and former employees who gathered to celebrate his vision and legacy. "Many people came just to see him," Mike shared, highlighting the profound impact Nick has had on the community over the decades.
Reflecting on the secrets to Croppers' success, Mike and Steve emphasized the importance of people. "Your customers are crucial; don't take them for granted – they are friends," they emphasized, adding that their dedicated staff, who share a commitment to making everyone feel at home, have played a significant role in Croppers' longevity. With some customers now in their fourth generation of visits, Croppers has undoubtedly become an integral part of Norwich.
