Struggling Amid Lack of Assistance
Let's talk about the Hardship Fund, a lifeline for those in dire straits struggling with rising energy costs. Unlike some countries, where energy bills are forecasted to decrease starting next year, our situation isn't as rosy. Alas, our city folk are facing a harsh reality with energy prices expected to soar by over 80%, thanks to those drastic price hikes on raw material markets, particularly due to the nasty war in Ukraine.
Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller has our backs. Recognizing that the current systems and support measures aren't enough to help those in distress, he's setting up the Hardship Fund. These people, with no means of self-help, will receive our aid quickly and bureaucracy-free from February 1, 2023. The BürgerStiftung, our city foundation, will handle the payout of donations, while our social welfare office will take care of the pre-processing. A handy hotline will also be open for inquiries.
Debt counseling services have hopped aboard, aiming to offer financial relief to the fund's target group and show them the way out of their debt traps. Sabine Tüllmann, our foundation's chairwoman, is pleased to land two initial donors laying the groundwork for our Hardship Fund. Even associations and institutions that care for our needy locals, struggling to keep up with energy costs, could benefit from the fund.
Stadtwerke CEO Julien Mounier understands the importance of social cohesion and vows to help those left behind by other aid providers. With the significant increase in gas prices, starting from February 1, his company has already announced that the basic supply will cost households 17.15 cents per kilowatt-hour (gross), up from 9.48 cents. That's quite a hefty price rise!
City Director Burkhard Hintzsche is worried that low-income folks will struggle to pay high energy prices in the long run. He calls on more companies and generous private individuals to contribute to the Hardship Fund. After all, in a jam, we should help each other out. Our city needs all hands on deck to stand together during these tough times.
- In light of the escalating energy costs, the finance sector is anticipated to play a significant role in supporting the Hardship Fund, aimed at providing assistance to those in need.
- Recognizing the increasing burden on personal-finance due to soaring energy costs, various businesses, including the Stadtwerke company, are stepping up to contribute and alleviate the situation.
- As the Hardship Fund is established to help those struggling with energy costs, the industry, particularly in finance and energy, could potentially collaborate to secure more resources for the fund, ensuring a comprehensive approach to addressing this crisis.
