Steepened Penalties: Key Upgrades for Motorists in This Year

In Russia, a series of significant changes to traffic rules have been introduced from 2025, aiming to enhance road safety and compliance. These updates, detailed below, bring stricter regulations and increased fines for violators.

Yielding to Special Vehicles

Drivers are now required to yield to any vehicle displaying special signals, even without identification marks. Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to 7,500 rubles or a one-year license suspension.

Traffic Fines and Penalties

Fines for various traffic offences have been increased. For instance, unbuckled seatbelts now attract a fine of 1,500 rubles, as opposed to the previous 1,000 rubles. Running a red light will cost you 1,500 rubles, compared to the earlier 500 rubles. Repeated ignoring of traffic signals will incur a penalty of 7,500 rubles.

Driving under the influence (DUI) fines have been raised from 30,000 to 45,000 rubles. Speeding fines now range from 750 to 7,500 rubles, an increase from the previous range of 500 to 5,000 rubles. Fines for dangerous maneuvers such as driving in oncoming lanes, on tram tracks, ignoring signs, refusing medical exams have also been increased.

Parking and stopping violations now attract a fine of 2,250 rubles, up from the previous 1,500 rubles. The discount period for traffic violation payments has been extended to 30 days with a reduced discount of 25%, compared to the previous 20 days and 50% discount.

Enforcement Changes

Fines for refusing to stop at a traffic inspector’s request have increased, potentially impacting driver-inspector interactions.

License Regulations

From April 1, 2025, Russia will no longer recognise foreign driver’s licenses for permanent residents and citizens, requiring them to replace foreign licenses with Russian ones.

Child Restraint Systems

Starting from 2025, the use of certain types of child restraint systems, including non-bucket car seats and belt adapters, is prohibited in Russia. Violation of these rules can result in fines ranging from 3,000 to 100,000 rubles.

These changes highlight the Russian government's commitment to improving road safety, but they also significantly increase the financial risks for violators. It's crucial for drivers to stay informed and adhere to these new rules to ensure a safer driving experience.
