In the ongoing debate between heat pumps and gas heaters, a recent analysis by energy expert Sandra Duy at Finanztip sheds light on the long-term costs of both options.

While the initial price of a heat pump may seem higher, Duy warns against making hasty decisions. She explains that state subsidies for heat pumps can reduce the cost to a realistic 50% of the original price for most homeowners. In Bremen, for instance, the prices for gas heaters are lower, ranging between 9,000 and 12,000 euros, according to Ewen from the Consumer Center Bremen. However, it's important to note that subsidies for heat pumps are granted based on a maximum of 30,000 euros, meaning any additional costs have to be borne by the client.

Inse Ewen, a consumer advocate, points out that the costs for heat pumps are significantly higher than 30,000 euros. Yet, the subsidy from the state of Bremen, according to Ewen, could make a significant case for a heat pump, offering up to 60% in total subsidies with federal funding until August 30th.

The actual costs of a gas heater model over 20 years amount to over 25,500 euros, while the additional CO2 costs for a gas heater over the same period are around 17,500 euros. These figures suggest that while the upfront costs for heat pumps may be higher, the long-term savings and environmental benefits could outweigh the initial investment.

However, it's crucial to consider other factors such as the ongoing energy expenses and the CO2 pricing. Hannah Simon from the Bremen Climate Protection Agency Energiekonsens states that the actual CO2 price is difficult to predict, with the current price being 55 euros per tonne and the Finanztip model assuming an average price of 182 euros.

It's also worth noting that the Building Energy Act requires gas heaters to be taken out of operation by 2045, and since 2024, new gas heaters must be mixed with biogas. This means that anyone who installs a gas heater today must be aware that renewable energies will be required in the coming years and either solar thermal systems must be installed or biogas supply will be necessary.

In conclusion, while the upfront costs for heat pumps are higher, the long-term savings and environmental benefits, combined with government subsidies, could make them a more cost-effective and sustainable choice in the long run. However, a comprehensive comparison that includes CO2 costs, ongoing energy expenses, and a detailed long-term analysis from Finanztip or Consumer Center Bremen is necessary to make a definitive statement on the total lifetime costs of both options.

[1] Source: Comparison with subsidies, heat pump after a 40% subsidy still costs €8,500 more initially than a new gas boiler. Including financing interest of €10,000, the total additional cost amounts to roughly €60,000. However, this figure's context and calculation details are unclear from this information alone.

  1. The environmental science of Bremen, through the Bremen Climate Protection Agency Energiekonsens, acknowledges the challenging prediction of the actual CO2 price.
  2. In Bremen, heat pumps, despite having more initial costs compared to gas heaters, qualify for government subsidies in the field of environmental-science and renewable-energy.
  3. The long-term costs of heat pumps, when considering the long-term savings, environmental benefits, government subsidies, and the potential for climate-change mitigation, can be more competitive than gas heaters in the finance sector.
  4. The industry in Bremen is working towards a future dictated by renewable-energy and cleaner alternatives, with the Building Energy Act mandating the phase-out of gas heaters by 2045 and the requirement for new gas heaters to be mixed with biogas from 2024.
