Eder to establish universal transfer hubs at train stations - Stations might see the installation of switchable uniform centers suggested by Eder

In a bid to improve the quality and connectivity of train stations in Rhineland-Palatinate, Environment and Mobility Minister Katrin Eder has announced plans to invest in infrastructure improvements. This initiative aims to create "seamless mobility stations" at major train stations across the region.

Minister Eder revealed that the ministry has invested around 2.2 million euros at the train station in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, with similar investments planned for other stations such as Betzdorf, Lambrecht, Bingen, and Mayen. The funding is part of a broader strategic effort to promote sustainable and efficient regional mobility.

The "seamless mobility stations" will offer a range of facilities to enhance travel convenience. These include elevators, ramps, enlarged bicycle parking, expanded park-and-ride facilities, secure parking for bicycles and e-bikes, and multimodal transfer points. The stations will also cater to park-and-ride, bike-and-ride, and have park-and-ride areas in rural areas.

Minister Eder emphasised the importance of accessibility, stating that all stations will have barrier-free access. The plan is backed by a total funding of approximately 190 million euros, with a state contribution of around 8 million euros allocated for these mobility stations.

The minister made these statements to the German Press Agency in Mainz, expressing her desire to make switching to the train more attractive. She also stressed that the funding for these stations is contingent on maintaining high standards. "Seamless" means the state will link funding to high standards, ensuring the delivery of reliable service and integrated mobility solutions.

Since 2021, the ministry has funded 21 multimodal transfer points with over nine million euros. Specific examples include the Saarburg train station connection, funded with park-and-ride, bike-and-ride, secure bike boxes, and a bus stop. Landau-West also received funding for barrier-free train station renovation, a barrier-free bus connection, and bike-and-ride and park-and-ride facilities.

Transfer facilities have also been funded at the train stations in Zweibrücken-Rosengarten and Trier-Euren, while three train stations in Bingen received funding for bike-and-ride facilities.

The creation of these "seamless mobility stations" is expected to facilitate seamless travel by integrating various modes of transport and ensuring barrier-free access for all users. This initiative is a significant step towards promoting greener transport options and integrated mobility solutions in Rhineland-Palatinate.

  1. As part of the plans to create "seamless mobility stations" in various train stations across Rhineland-Palatinate, financial investments will be directed towards vocational training programs aimed at maintaining the high standards of the stations' infrastructure, thus ensuring reliable service.
  2. Alongside infrastructure improvements and accessibility facilities, the ministry envisions partnering with local industries to provide vocational training opportunities in public-transit and transportation sectors, fostering a community that promotes sustainable and efficient regional mobility.
