Splice Acquires Spitfire Audio, Blending Cinematic Soundscapes with AI-Powered Platform

Music creation platform Splice has announced its acquisition of Spitfire Audio, a UK-based developer of high-end virtual instrument libraries. This move marks Splice's entry into the plugin space, valued at $640 million, and the wider music software and services sector exceeding $7 billion.

The combined company plans to develop new products that blend Spitfire Audio's cinematic soundscapes and orchestral expertise with Splice's sample catalogue and AI-powered discovery engine. This collaboration aims to make professional-quality cinematic soundscapes more accessible to a wider spectrum of producers, including electronic music creators.

Thomson, co-founder of Spitfire Audio, will continue to oversee the company's creative direction. Olivier Robert-Murphy, CEO of Spitfire Audio, will report to Kakul Srivastava, CEO of Splice. Both CEOs have expressed a commitment to celebrating and supporting the work of composers, musicians, and producers.

The first announced new product initiative is releasing Spitfire Audio’s high-end orchestral and effects libraries through Splice’s Rent-To-Own plugin marketplace. This approach allows users to access professional-quality cinematic soundscapes from Spitfire, such as BBC Symphony Orchestra Professional, Abbey Road Two: Iconic Strings Pro, and Eric Whitacre Choir—with affordable monthly payments for full ownership.

Though specific new products beyond this Rent-To-Own release have not yet been detailed, the collaboration indicates a blending of Spitfire’s renowned cinematic sample libraries and effects with Splice’s AI-powered platform and marketplace infrastructure. Splice CEO Kakul Srivastava highlighted the significance of making these iconic sound libraries more affordable and integrated into a modern music creation workflow.

Spitfire Audio, founded in 2007, has established itself as a platform for composers, producers, artists, and musicians, providing virtual instrument libraries from notable figures like Olafur Arnalds and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Splice, since its launch in 2015, has become a key player in modern music production, with one million sounds downloaded every day from its sample catalogue. Splice has over 10 million music producers and creators using its ethical AI-powered platform.

The music creation market is projected to nearly double to $14 billion by 2031, according to MIDiA Research. With this acquisition, the combined company is well positioned to capitalize on this growth. Both Splice and Spitfire Audio will continue to operate independently in the near term.

Paul Thomson, co-founder of Spitfire Audio, expressed a focus on inspiring people to create extraordinary music. He emphasized the technological advances enabling library access via Rent-To-Own, which paves the way for expanded user creativity with these tools. Splice and Spitfire Audio are sound-first, creator-led companies, aiming to develop tools that expand, not replace, human creativity.
