Southern regions of the UK have the highest number of planning violation instances as indicated by the enforcement map.

In the year ending March 2024, a significant increase was observed in the issuance of planning enforcement notices across England. The number of notices rose by 9.5% compared to the previous year, with a total of 3,928 notices issued.

London emerged as the area where issues with planning permissions and enforcement notices were most prominent. The capital city led the way with 1,301 enforcement notices, more than any other region in the country. Brent, a London borough, topped the list within the city, with 162 notices issued. Westminster followed closely behind with 129 notices.

Interestingly, three of the top five regions with the most notices were located in the South of England. Barnet, another London borough, came in second with 106 notices, while Buckinghamshire, the only non-London area in the top five, reported 98 notices.

On the other hand, National Parks received the least enforcement notices overall, with 82 issued. This is likely due to the fact that National Parks have their own planning policy documents and aren't decided by local councils.

The North East had the fewest issues outside of national parks, with only 84 notices issued.

David Weaver, Director of Reveal, advises choosing the right architect to avoid planning enforcement. Following the correct processes when planning a project from the outset, and working closely with the client's architect, can help avoid a planning enforcement action.

Planning enforcement notices are official documents issued by local authorities to address breaches of planning control. These breaches can occur when construction or land use does not comply with necessary planning permissions or regulations. The local councils have the authority to issue enforcement notices to rectify the work or demolish unapproved structures.

In conclusion, while the number of planning enforcement notices has risen, it is crucial for individuals and businesses to ensure they are following the correct planning procedures to avoid any potential issues. By working closely with an experienced architect and understanding the planning regulations, one can minimise the risk of receiving an enforcement notice.
