Solar Energy Integration and Sustainable Agriculture Empowerment for Small-Scale Farmers: Statements by Shivraj Singh Chouhan
"Embrace Integrated Farming with Solar Power, Says Minister Chouhan"
Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan preached the importance of integrated farming and renewable energy at the National Agriculture-Renewable Energy Conference 2025 in New Delhi on June 4, 2025. Organized by the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI), the event brought together policymakers, experts, and farmers to exchange ideas and find solutions for a sustainable future.
Following suit, Minister Chouhan emphasized the necessity of adopting integrated farming systems for our marginal farmers. By effectively using their land, these systems can pave the way to a brighter future for the farming community in India. After all, agriculture remains a vital source of livelihood for nearly 50% of the population.
During his speech, Chouhan shed light on his recent visits as part of the 15-day 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan', which began on May 29. His travels have been extensive, with stops in Odisha, Jammu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Patna, and Maharashtra.
Identifying the key areas of focus for empowering farmers, Chouhan highlighted the need to increase production, reduce costs, ensure fair prices, offer timely compensation for losses, encourage diversification, and promote balanced use of fertilizers. Organic farming also captures his attention as a critical step to preserve our soil health for future generations.
Of particular interest to the Minister is the potential of solar energy for farmers. He emphasized the ongoing successes of the PM-KUSUM scheme in providing energy solutions via solar technology for agricultural purposes. To take things a step further, Minister Chouhan proposed a novel idea: the installation of elevated solar panels in crop fields, allowing for simultaneous farming and energy generation.
While this concept is still a work in progress, Chouhan voiced his confidence that the government will support its implementation boldly. He also urged everyone to heed the importance of World Environment Day on June 5 and emphasized solar energy as a cornerstone of environmental protection.
