Sheinbaum demonstrates insightful leadership strategies in dealing with Trump, as detailed by our CEO's observation

In the turbulent political climate of early 2025, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico managed to steer her country clear of heavy tariffs on Mexican goods, thanks to her strategic diplomatic engagement and cooperation with the Trump administration.

The tariffs, initially set at 25%, were announced in February 2025, targeting the influx of synthetic opioids and border security issues. However, they were temporarily lifted on March 6 after President Sheinbaum held a direct conversation with President Trump. This reprieve was contingent on Mexico's continued efforts to combat narcotrafficking and immigration.

Mexico's unique economic and geographic ties with the U.S., and their mutual dependency in production chains such as textiles and automotive sectors, made tariff imposition riskier and less straightforward. The U.S. textile industry, for instance, expressed concern over tariffs disrupting the integrated North American co-production chain.

President Sheinbaum's government also publicly rejected accusations by President Trump that Mexico was failing to confront drug cartels, signalling a stance of cooperative sovereignty rather than confrontation. This, along with concrete steps to align with U.S. demands such as increased drug cartel seizures and prisoners handed over to U.S. authorities, bolstered Mexico's exemption from the tariffs.

President Sheinbaum's administration has been successful in avoiding a full-scale tariff battle, differentiating Mexico's experience from other countries caught in President Trump's comprehensive tariff campaigns.

In her tenure, President Sheinbaum has also made significant strides in combating cartel violence and drug trafficking. Her administration has deployed 10,000 troops to the border, sent 29 cartel leaders to the U.S. for trial, and dismantled or destroyed more than 1,000 drug labs.

President Sheinbaum, the first female and Jewish president of Mexico, enjoys an impressive approval rating of 80%. She has won President Trump's respect by appeasing him and demonstrating progress in stopping cartel violence and drug trafficking.

However, President Sheinbaum will have to continue demonstrating her administration's commitment and show progress on stopping the flow of drugs to avoid future tariffs. It's important to note that President Trump does not seem concerned that inflation will increase as a result of placing tariffs on top trade partners.

In the midst of these challenges, President Sheinbaum deserves credit for steering Mexico through tough times. Reports suggest that the CIA has been conducting covert drone operations over Mexico to spy on cartels, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing fight against drug trafficking.

Despite the U.S.'s ongoing offensive against Mexico, accusing her administration of having an intolerable alliance with cartels, being afraid of the cartels, and being unwilling to do anything significant against them, President Sheinbaum has de-escalated the situation after President Trump ordered military action against cartels.
