Saxon Officials and Business Leaders Fear Summer Flight Route Cuts
Saxon officials and business leaders have expressed concern over potential flight route cuts at regional airports. While no specific routes have been confirmed for reduction or cancellation in the summer flight schedule 2026, Lufthansa has hinted at possible cuts due to high aviation fees and pending political decisions.
Saxon Minister of Economics Dirk Panter and other signatories have demanded the maintenance of current flight offers in Dresden and Leipzig/Halle. They argue that the loss-making airports need more passengers and financial support to stay afloat.
Lufthansa, however, is considering cuts at multiple airports, including Bremen, Dresden, Cologne, Leipzig, Münster, Nuremberg, and Stuttgart. The airline has announced cuts to flight connections at smaller German airports due to high federal aviation fees. The decision on which connections will be reduced or canceled depends on various factors, including political decisions.
Business and research leaders in Saxony have warned that reduced flights could harm trade fairs, congresses, and industrial connections. Dr. Fabian Magerl, CEO of IHK Leipzig, has called for reduced taxes and charges for air traffic to maintain competitiveness. Meanwhile, 130 ground personnel at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports have been dismissed.
The summer flight schedule 2026 is currently in the planning phase, with an expected publication by the end of October/beginning of November 2025. The fate of flight routes at Saxon airports hangs in the balance, awaiting political decisions and negotiations between airlines and stakeholders.
