Santander Backs Poland's Renewable Energy Transition with PLN 370 Million Wind Farm Financing

Santander Bank Polska has taken a significant step in supporting Poland's transition to a low-carbon economy by financing six onshore wind farms worth PLN 370 million (EUR 81 million). This financing forms part of a broader portfolio with a total nominal capacity of 149.4 MW.

The agreement, signed on 18th January 2022, involves the construction of wind farms across Poland's geography. Five are located in the North (Kozlowo, Krasin, Lichnowy, Chojnice, and Piatkowo wind farms), while another one is in the South (Bogoria wind farm). The wind farms are part of a sale agreement executed with Mirova, as disclosed to the market last August by EDPR.

The financing for this project totals PLN 655mln (EUR 144mln), with the commercial tranche partially guaranteed by EKF, Denmark's Export Credit Agency. CaixaBank provides the remaining 50% of the commercial tranche, and the European Investment Bank also supports the project, bringing the total financing to PLN 655mln (EUR 144mln).

This wind farm financing project is one of the biggest in Poland to date, contributing to Poland’s growing renewable energy supply and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has also partnered with Santander Bank Polska in extending and increasing renewable energy financing.

Santander's role in facilitating capital for clean energy is evident, as they serve as a global coordinator and bookrunner in large renewable energy financing deals in Europe. Juan de Porras, Vice-President of the Management Board and head of Corporate & Investment Banking at Santander Bank Polska, expressed his satisfaction, stating, "We are happy to support clients investing in Renewable Energy Sources and accelerating the green transformation in Poland."

Santander Bank Polska has become a leader in renewable energy finance and advice due to its efforts in environment, social, and corporate governance (ESG) and other areas to help customers reach more sustainable models and a less polluting economy. As Poland increases its renewable energy share, with wind and solar significantly contributing to over 40% of the country's energy mix as of mid-2025, Santander's provision of substantial financing for wind farms directly supports this transition.

This financing agreement is another important step in executing Santander's responsible banking strategy, demonstrating their commitment to accelerating clean energy deployment and helping Poland reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet sustainability goals. All projects are in a very advanced construction phase or already in operation.

  1. Santander Bank Polska's financing of six onshore wind farms in Poland, worth PLN 370 million (EUR 81 million), aligns with their role in corporate governance, as they prioritize supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
  2. The renewable energy industry benefits from the scientific research conducted in the field of environmental science, as evidenced by the success of wind farm projects like those financed by Santander Bank Polska.
  3. The investment in renewable energy, such as the wind farms supported by Santander Bank Polska, is a significant step in combating climate-change by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
  4. The financing provided by Santander Bank Polska for renewable energy projects not only supports the growth of the industry but also contributes to Poland's financial sustainability, as these projects bring in revenue and promote economic development.
