Record-Breaking Pacific Salmon Catch in Russia's Far East

In a remarkable turn of events, the catch of Pacific salmon in Russia's Far East has surpassed 125,000 metric tons, with the Kamchatka Peninsula leading the pack. According to reports from Russian Fisheries, the Khabarovsk Krai, Sakhalin, Magadan, and Chukotka have also recorded impressive catches.

As of mid-2025, the Kamchatka Region has caught an astounding 178,000 tons of Pacific salmon, accounting for approximately 83% of the national total. The Khabarovsk Krai follows closely with a catch of 13,600 tons, more than double its 2023 annual total. Other notable catches include Primorye with over 8,800 tons, Magadan Oblast with about 10,131 tons, and Sakhalin Oblast with over 3,500 tons, while Chukotka Autonomous Okrug reported a smaller amount of 254.5 tons [1][4].

The overall forecast for Pacific salmon catch in the Far East for 2025 was significantly increased to approximately 425,481 tons, driven by strong harvests predominantly of pink salmon in the Kamchatka area. The Khabarovsk Krai’s performance notably exceeded previous years, indicating robust growth in its salmon fisheries [4].

In the Khabarovsk Krai, the main part of the catch consists of pink salmon, totaling over 172,800 tons. The second most common species is sockeye salmon, with a total of 27,900 tons, accounting for 13% of the total catch. Chinook salmon account for 225 tons, silver salmon for 43 tons, and coho salmon for 32 tons. Interestingly, chum salmon make up 6.3% of the total catch, with a total of 13,500 tons [1][4].

These figures are reported by the "Khabarovsk Krai Today" news agency. The proportion of pink salmon in the total catch of the Khabarovsk Krai is 80.6%, highlighting the dominance of this species in the region's catch. The Khabarovsk Krai and the Magadan region also had significant catches, contributing to the total catch of Pacific salmon in the current season, which exceeds 214,000 tons [1][4].

Despite the impressive catch in the Khabarovsk Krai, Kamchatka remains the center of salmon fishing activity in Russia's Far East. The record-breaking catch in the Kamchatka Peninsula has led to a forecast raise for the annual catch to 280,750 tons [1][4]. This news underscores the ongoing vitality and potential for growth in Russia's salmon fishing industry.
