Retro Trains Enhance Regional Traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia

In a bid to improve regional traffic reliability and attract more passengers, the TRI Train Rental (RB 37) has reintroduced retro trains in North Rhine-Westphalia. These vintage trains, refurbished with modern locomotives, have garnered above-average ratings in cleanliness, reliability, and passenger satisfaction, according to the VRR quality report.

The retro trains, originally from Federal Railway Times, are a unique addition to the regional transport scene. They stand out with their nostalgic design, featuring historically styled interiors and exteriors that hark back to earlier rail eras. Despite their age, these trains can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h, making them suitable for dense regional traffic.

TRI's deployment of these retro trains focuses on routes where increased reliability and passenger appeal are crucial. By offering a dependable alternative to conventional regional transport options, these trains aim to ease congestion and improve the overall punctuality of regional transit systems.

Simon Kruck, who has been working for TRI for four and a half years, appreciates the simplicity of the retro trains. He prefers the old technology due to their ability to continue driving when a wagon malfunctions, unlike modern trains. Christine Warkotsch and Heinrich-Joachim Kocks also express nostalgia for these trains, reminding them of the past.

TRI ensures the reliable operation of these trains by setting up a dedicated training area where young talents learn not only how to drive but also how to repair, maneuver, and inspect the trains. The company sees itself as the market leader in emergency and replacement traffic, using rolling stock that has stopped being produced.

The retro trains, over 60 years old, have seats arranged as they were six decades ago, with luggage racks and sliding windows. Although they are not barrier-free, a train attendant is present in every train to assist with boarding and disembarking. The trains run on several lines on behalf of the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association (VRR).

Dominik Hochwarth, an editor at the VDI publishing house, has been writing for the website since September 2022, and his articles often cover the railway and German Railway. The deployment of retro trains by TRI in North Rhine-Westphalia aims to support sustainable regional mobility goals by offering a unique, historically inspired service that can attract more passengers and provide a dependable alternative to conventional regional transport options.

Despite the squeaking, jerking, and cracking sounds, these retro trains offer a distinct travel experience that contrasts with the quietness of modern trains. TRI sees its role as a supplement, not a step backwards, in the deployment of retro trains for regional traffic, ensuring that passengers arrive at their destinations on time.

  1. The deployment of retro trains by TRI in North Rhine-Westphalia also aims to support the sustainable financing of regional mobility projects, as the unique, historically inspired service can attract more passengers, thereby increasing revenues from employment in the transportation industry, particularly within the rail sector.
  2. In the context of the regional transportation industry, the reliable operation of retro trains by TRI can have wider implications, potentially leading to improvements in finance by reducing the need for external funding for transportation infrastructure due to the trains' ability to alleviate congestion and ensure punctuality of regional transit systems.
