Retail industry veteran appointed as Kohl's Chief Operating Officer
In a strategic move aimed at revitalising the retailer, Kohl's has appointed Dave Alves as its new President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective from April 2023. Alves, a 30-year retail veteran, brings a wealth of experience in department stores and off-price retail to the table.
Alves' extensive career includes stints as the Chief Retail Officer for Bealls Retail Group and in leadership roles at TJX Canada, TJX Europe, Hudson's Bay, and Sterling Shoes. His appointment comes at a crucial time for Kohl's, which is aiming to elevate its business and offerings for the next generation of shoppers.
The decision to bring Alves on board was driven by several investors who saw him as the preferred choice to succeed Michelle Gass, who left Kohl's abruptly at the end of last year to become president at Levi's. Tom Kingsbury, the current CEO of Kohl's, shares this sentiment, stating that Alves' experience will be invaluable in driving the business forward.
In his new role, Alves will oversee Kohl's operations, including its stores, supply chain, distribution centers, real estate, purchasing, sustainability, risk management, and compliance functions. This high-level executive position requires Alves to lead the strategic execution within the company and drive the business forward across stores, e-commerce, and other channels.
Kohl's is currently in turmoil, having pulled its guidance for the year in November. The department store named a chief merchant earlier this month, and with Alves' appointment, the company seems to be taking decisive steps towards recovery.
It's worth noting that Kingsbury himself previously served in an interim capacity as CEO. Prior to that, he oversaw marketing, business development, e-commerce, and information technology at Kohl's. Kingsbury believes Alves' addition to the team will be a great addition, further strengthening Kohl's leadership as it faces the challenges ahead.
This appointment marks a significant shift for Kohl's, as it looks to reposition itself in the competitive retail landscape. With Alves' deep retail background and extensive experience across U.S. and global markets, Kohl's may well be on its way to a brighter future.
