Charming Charlie Expands Nationwide with 14 New Store Openings

After two bankruptcies, the popular retailer Charming Charlie is making a comeback. The brand, known for its color-grouping visual merchandising model, is set to open 14 new stores across the United States in March and April 2021.

The new stores will be located in shopping centers such as First Colony in Houston, Willowbrook Mall in Houston, Stonebriar Centre in Frisco, The Parks Mall at Arlington in Arlington, The Oaks in Thousand Oaks, Pembroke Lakes Mall in Pembroke Pines, Jordan Creek in Des Moines, La Encantada in Tucson, Water Tower Place in Chicago, FlatIron Crossing in Broomfield, and Vintage Faire in Modesto.

The company's previous bankruptcy left it with a reduced store footprint. However, Charming Charlie is now expanding its store footprint by opening these new locations. The new stores will be located in Texas (Houston, Frisco, Arlington), California (Thousand Oaks, Pembroke Pines, Fresno, Ventura, Modesto), Florida (Pembroke Pines), Iowa (Des Moines), Arizona (Tucson), Illinois (Chicago), Colorado (Broomfield), and New Jersey (Deptford). One store is set to open this Friday in Houston.

Charming Charlie's stores will feature merchandise in categories such as apparel, handbags, jewelry, gifts, beauty, shoes, tech, pets, and kids. This expansion marks the retailer's reopening in communities that love the brand most.

Historically, Charming Charlie filed for bankruptcy twice—first in December 2017, and again in 2019. Despite some reopened stores later closing, the brand has shown persistence in re-establishing itself. Its current strategy focuses on a selective physical retail presence combined with a previously demonstrated emphasis on e-commerce.

The founder of Charming Charlie, Charlie Chanaratsopon, is also associated with Boosted Commerce, a company founded in 2019 that aims to acquire and develop numerous e-commerce consumer brands. This background suggests that Charming Charlie benefits from expertise in both retail and digital commerce, influencing its strategy to blend physical store expansion with digital growth.

There is no publicly detailed long-term expansion blueprint beyond recent store openings. However, these moves imply a cautious but optimistic strategic approach: re-entering high-visibility retail locations in well-leased shopping centers while leveraging the founder’s strong ties to e-commerce growth frameworks.

In September 2019, Charming Charlie's intellectual property was sold for around $1.1 million. This sale marked a new chapter for the brand, one that is focused on rebuilding a selective physical presence at strategic retail locations, supported by e-commerce capabilities and expertise in scaling consumer product brands digitally.

This expansion is a promising sign for Charming Charlie's future, indicating a commitment to sustainable growth by balancing physical store expansion with digital growth.
